Student-Centered Programs

Mill Creek Students Conduct Science Experiments

Mill Creek's student-centered programs are a key element of our curriculum which enables us to help students reach their full potential.

Individual Learning Hour (ILH)

This is an elective course designed to assist students with their studies. The class is limited to 10-15 students so that each can receive individual tutoring with class work. ILH helps students plan study time to maximize effort. Students are required to keep an assignment log that is checked daily. Some students are required to take the class; others can sign up to get extra academic support. Weekly updates are sent home to parents.

Student Planning Center

The Student Planning Center (SPC) provides a positive, non-punitive atmosphere that allows students to evaluate the behaviors they have chosen to exhibit in the classroom and to learn to make responsible choices in the future. While in SPC, students discuss and write a plan of action.

Parents are notified when their child has been sent to the SPC. The student remains in the SPC only for the remainder of the class period from which they were sent. If a student is repeatedly sent to the SPC and proves that he/she is unable to learn to make better choices with this non-punitive approach, then the progressive discipline plan which includes detentions and/or suspensions is utilized.

Peer Tutoring

Students with a 3.0 GPA can take this elective class and be trained to help their peers with academic studies. Tutors are trained in the different styles of learning and communication and then are placed in the elective class, Individual Learning Hour, to assist peers with homework.

Thumbs Up

The Thumbs Up meeting is a way for teams to discuss the progress of each of their students by name. With the support of the administrators, counselor and social worker, the team will designate follow-up interventions as needed for students. It is an absolute non-negotiable requirement that an administrator and the counselor attend the Thumbs Up meetings. Thumbs Up meetings are conducted by each team every two weeks. The Thumbs Up Award is both motivational and informational. While receiving this award will motivate some students, all students will receive valuable and timely feedback about their progress.
