Enrollment & Registration Info

Welcome to Dexter Community Schools!

Dexter Community Schools enrolls new students online using our Registration Gateway. This secure software allows new families to efficiently register their students online, and allows existing families to update their student information at any time. All registrations and updates are reviewed by school secretaries before changes are published.

For new families, once the online registration has been submitted, you may bring the student's original birth certificate to the school office (or Copeland in the summer) to complete registration. Use the link at right to Enroll a New Student.

For existing families, we send home letters in August reminding families to update each student's information. These letters include instructions. families can use the link at right to Update Student Information. For existing students with changes to their medical information, parents should also complete the Medical Update Form

***Be sure to format your student birthdate MM/DD/YYYY including the slashes.***

Please click on the headings below to expand the information on each topic.

Kindergarten and Young Five Enrollment

Kindergarten and Young Five Enrollment

Michigan law requires students to be five years old by September 1st in order to enroll in kindergarten. The young five program is designed for students with late summer and fall birthdays. The decision whether to enroll a late-summer birthday 5-year-old in young five vs. kindergarten is something we recommend discussing with our staff so we can find the developmentally appropriate program for each student. (Kindergarten waiver requests are available for students who will turn five between September 2nd and December 1st, please see the waiver request form for further information.)

For Fall 2018, we are changing the way we register young five and kindergarten students.

  • On January 8th, we will open online pre-registration for fall 2018. New families can complete this process by visiting this link: registration.dexterschools.org(If you registered other students online this year, you can use your existing registration gateway credentials to log in. Contact the main office to look that info up for you if needed).
  • On March 7th, parents and guardians may tour Bates and Cornerstone from 6:00pm-7:00pm. At 7:00pm, all adults should head to Creekside cafeteria for an informational meeting and to turn in their final registration documents: birth certificate and proof of residence. Our staff can make copies, or families can bring their own copies to save time but we must see the original birth certificate. Following the informational meeting, we will make copies of documents for anyone who needs them.
  • Space for our young five half-day program is extremely limited. Parents and guardians interested in half-day young five will receive numbers in line for the available spots at the informational meeting.
  • Families who do not live in the Dexter district but are interested in enrolling may apply for schools of choice status in mid February. Please visit our schools of choice page for information on eligibility and the application process.

Please note: Young five is primarily a full-day program. Space in our half-day young five program is very limited. Families wishing to enroll in the half-day young five program must appear in person at registration night in order to receive a place in line for a spot. Half-day spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please review the kindergarten/young five information page for further details.
