The City of Dexter

The City of Dexter is located in Southeast Michigan, along the banks of the Huron River and Mill Creek.  Residents and visitors can enjoy a day on a river, walking along nature trails, or biking on the County Border-to-Border trail, stopping in our historic downtown for lunch and some shopping.  Cultural activities include a local theater, historical museum, summer concerts, ice skating in the winter, festivals, and simply playing in the parks.

Local Municipalities


Dexter Township

The first town meeting of the original Dexter Township was held in the home of Judge Dexter, May 28, 1827. Up to 1832 the entire western half of Washtenaw County, plus parts of Jackson and Livingston Counties, were governed by the original Township of Dexter. It was comprised of land that would later become Dexter, Scio, Webster, Lima, Freedom, Bridgewater, Manchester, Sharon, Sylvan, and Lyndon Townships. A new Township Hall was erected at 6880 Dexter-Pinckney Road in 1970. There are many lakes in Dexter Township,the principal ones being Silver, Half Moon, North Lake, West Lake, part of Four Mile lake, Portage and Base Lakes.

Lima Township

A post office was established in Lima Township in 1832, and was first called Mill Creek, the name being afterwards changed to Lima Center. Asa Williams was the first postmaster and the village was platted here in 1838 by W.A. Shaw, J.E. Freer and Abram Arnold.

Scio Township

The third largest township in Washtenaw County, Scio comprises about 32 square miles located between Maple, Scio Church, Parker and Joy Roads. It is a community of more than 16,500 residents, located immediately west of Ann Arbor. The Township is home to the beautiful Huron River – hugged by the scenic Huron River Drive – and is bisected by Jackson Boulevard and I-94.

Webster Township

Webster Township, in north central Washtenaw County, Michigan, has retained much of its pleasant and scenic rural character. For those who call Webster Township "home", the quiet rural byways among farms and beautiful homes are a source of collective community pride. Webster Township is an area of rich history, long tradition and beauty. The rural atmosphere and friendly community are attractions to people of all walks of life. The Township encompasses rivers, lakes, rolling hills, open fields and winding roads.
