Are
School Meals Nutritious?
Schools are required to follow
the Dietary Guidelines for
Americans. Our menus are designed to meet or exceed the meal
requirements for calcium, iron, Vitamins A and C, saturated fat,
cholesterol, and dietary fiber. Some examples of healthy concepts in
our menus are:
-
We use whole grain chicken
nuggets and lowfat mozzarella
cheese.
-
We eliminate added salt in
all of our recipes and use low
sodium products whenever possible.
-
Our deli meat is low fat
turkey and nitrate-free.
-
We use turkey taco meat and
turkey sausage too!
-
We offer 100% fruit juice,
lowfat chocolate, white, and skim
milk. All of our mlk i s rBST hormone free.
-
None of our menu items are
deep-fried or grilled. All of our
products are oven baked, a cooking process that reduces the fat content
and fat retention of food.
-
Studies conducted by Dr.
Alice Rainville, nationally
renowned nutritionist from Eastern Michigan University, concluded that
students who ate school lunches consumed less calories from fat than
students who brought their lunch from home. Research also found that
students eating school meals consumed three times as many dairy
products, twice as much fruit, and seven times as many vegetables
compared to those who didn't.
