During March is Reading Month 2026, Wylie fourth grade teacher Jessica Elkin’s students thought not only about their personal reading goals, but also about helping others achieve theirs. They decided to become advocates for Metro Detroit-based nonprofit Making Spirits Bright. Making Spirits Bright is dedicated to promoting and providing access to books that brighten the lives of youth, while enhancing literacy and the love of learning. They distribute thousands of like-new books directly to children and families, often through free book fairs.

In early March, Dexter High School held their second annual Career Fair for all 9th-12th grade students. Approximately 1,000 DHS students participated in three 35-minute sessions with professionals who shared their career path journey across a wide variety of careers. DHS Career Development Facilitator Kaitlyn Nelson presented the Career Fair’s success, student and speaker feedback, and future plans to the Board of Education on Monday, March 23, 2026.

This January, the Dexter High School Model United Nations club sent a twelve-student delegation to the 39th annual Model United Nations at the University of Michigan (MUNUM XXXIX). The conference welcomed nearly 1,000 participants from Michigan, Ohio, Florida, and an international delegation from Libya. The keynote address was delivered by the Honorable Dr. Susan Page, U-M Law School and Ford School of Public Policy professor and former U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan.

In November 2025, Wylie hosted an Immersion Event for the national Place-Based Education Conference held at Eastern Michigan University. Educators from across Michigan and Utah spent the day exploring place-based learning through experiences along a local creek, in the surrounding community, and in classrooms. The event highlighted collaboration between instructional leaders and teachers to showcase community-connected learning in action. District staff also share their expertise with their peers on Dexter PD days.

At the end of last year, then-sophomores Eliza Bigelow and Ayla Wright had an idea: to start a club at Dexter High School for students interested in pursuing careers in health care. Both students are part of the Washtenaw Community College (WCC) Health Care Cluster, a three-course sequence of college-level health classes taught at DHS that awards students three WCC college credits upon completion. Inspired by that experience, they sought to establish a local chapter of the national organization Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). They asked David Teddy, a DHS health teacher, to serve as advisor—and the club quickly took off.
