The Dexter Athletic Department recognizes outstanding Dexter student-athletes with the Athlete of the Month program. Each month, one female and one male student-athlete who has shown a combination of outstanding performance, leadership, and/or exemplary effort will be recognized. Head coaches make nominations for their student-athlete(s), then recipients are selected by a committee of Dexter administrators. Congratulations to our October Athletes of the Month!
Senior field hockey player Lilly Mitchell helped lead Dexter to the MHSAA State Finals four times in her four years. This two-time state champ was named “Player of the Year” by the Michigan Field Hockey Coaches Association this fall. Head Coach Keely Tamer said, “there isn't a single notable performance to share as every day that Mitch practiced or played a game, she gave 100% and competed to the best of her abilities. She prepared in the off-season, modeled what fitness for the sport looks like, loved her teammates, strived to win every season, every game, and every play. Her determination shows most when she is recovering back when a ball has found its way behind her. She understands the tactics, knows how to control the game and the ball and uses her voice on the field to help her team. She is well-deserving of this honor!”
Senior tennis player Cayden Cappelli was selected Athlete of the Month for October after being nominated by Head Coach Rob Smothers. Cayden played #2 singles this year and had the best record on the team (15-5). He was a regional finalist and posted wins against Saline, Chelsea (#5 in Division 3), and Mattawan during the regular season. A relentless competitor in every match, he exerted his athletic ability in ways that are uncommon in the tennis world. He came up just short of winning a match at States against the #9 team in the state in D2 (U of D Jesuit), but just like the entire season, he left everything on the court and was celebrated by Dexter players and parents alike. Coach Smothers said, “I think that his play and conduct throughout this season embodies all that DreadStrong stands for! Not only did he have success on the court, he also was a great leader of this team.”
