The Dexter Drama Directing Series, affectionately known as “3D,” is an annual celebration of student-driven creativity at Dexter High School. Now in its fourteenth year, this unique production features a collection of one-act performances that are fully crafted by students. From directing to acting to technical support, and even writing– every aspect of “3D” is designed, created, and executed by the students themselves. What makes this production even more remarkable is its tight timeframe. The shows are staged in the four-week period between the fall play’s final performance and auditions for the winter musical. Creating an entire production in such a short time requires student directors, actors, and crew that are focused and truly committed to their craft.
The “3D” series not only showcases student leadership but also highlights the creative talents of student playwrights. Since its debut, at least one student-written play has always been included in the performance lineup. As the club’s website proudly states, “We feel wonderfully blessed to have students within Dexter who have the talent, drive, and ambition to meet this challenge.” Senior writer/director Kate Rossow shares, “The most rewarding moment came during the performances, watching the audience laugh, gasp, and cry. Sitting among them, I realized how powerful writing and directing can be. Standing on stage afterward, laughing through tears, I knew I had moved them with my story—which was my greatest hope.”
In addition to the chance to write and direct, the “3D” series allows students to explore all aspects of theater production. Junior director Caleb Drummond encourages students to take advantage of the opportunity. “Our program is unique,” Drummond says, “few schools offer students the opportunity to direct their own shows.” The experience allows students to hone their leadership skills, collaborate creatively, and explore the complexities of producing a live performance from start to finish.
