Mill Creek Camp Update #1

Hello Mill Creek Families,

Camp is in full swing. Students are settled into their groups and cabins. They’ve had their first group meal in Malachi Dining Hall and are now engaging in their first sessions. I’ll try to send out some quick updates each day so you can live vicariously through your kid’s experiences. These emails are written up really fast as we are busy going back and forth supporting camp in Napoleon and the physical building with 8th graders back in Dexter. Please understand they may not have perfect grammar or punctuation (with an occasional run on sentence). I do not use AI to write, so if you do catch any errors, just know they are authentically mine.

Students are already beginning to reflect on the fact that they won’t have their cell phones for the rest of the week. Lauren Straub, our media specialist, shared at her table that when this realization sank in with one particular student they exclaimed, “Oh no. . . my Duolingo Streak”! Which was immediately followed up by a “Macauley Culkin-esque Home Alone Face.” Those of you that experienced pop culture in the 90’s should be able to follow that reference. Yes, many social media streaks across Dexter will probably end this week. We think that’s a good thing.

It’s also always a bit amusing to see the reactions of the parent volunteers after a few hours at camp. Some are in their element and digging right in. While a few others look a little “shell shocked” as they were not anticipating quite this much energy at camp. Camp could not run without our parent volunteers and we are very appreciative!

The first night at camp brings a wide spectrum of responses from kids. Some take right to it while others may struggle a little bit falling asleep. Parent volunteers and an experienced Mill Creek staff will be there to support your child if they need it. After the first night, kids are so fatigued from the activities and lack of sleep that it doesn’t tend to be an issue on the second night. The first night of camp is usually the most challenging and then gets significantly easier. Volunteers and Staff are capable and ready to support any and all students if needed.

We will send something tomorrow to update you on how things are going out at YMCA Storer Camp! So far we have great weather and great kids, so things are off to an excellent start. Don't forget, no news is good news!

Thanks,
Brett and Katie
