Mill Creek Camp Update #3

Hello Mill Creek Families,

The weather is a little less ideal today. We have some intermittent rain and the mosquitoes are having a family reunion here at Camp Storer. Nevertheless, camp goes on and the kids are being troopers and in good spirits. The conditions have not stopped any of the activities and it’s not enough rain to make things uncomfortable. The mosquitoes could chill out though.

Students get the opportunity to nominate their classmates for “Make A Difference Awards” at camp. Students write another classmate’s name down on a piece of paper and include how they helped them. They drop it in a box, and then the camp staff reads them over the microphone at meals. The students are really sincere, but occasionally a few jokers write some things and put them in the drop box. Camp staff previews them first and usually catches anyone that is trying to “pull a fast one.” However, one got through the “filter” this morning when it was announced at breakfast that “Brock Lee (Broccoli) helped me when I got lost.” Score one for the students. If you can’t find humor in middle school kids you shouldn’t be working in a middle school. Staff also agreed if a “play on words” was going to make it all the way to the mic, we’d rather have that one than some of the other possibilities.

A staff member shared a story about how she overheard some girls leaving horseback riding. They were ecstatic from the experience and arguing about whose horse was better. Horseback riding typically is one of the activities kids really look forward to at camp. We apologize if any of your kids come home and start putting the “full court press on” about getting a horse. I’ll share advice I’ve received before from some of our longtime Dexter farming families, “When your kid asks for a horse, have them come and clean the stalls at our farm for a week and that will fix your problem.”

“Lights Out” went very smooth last night. Kids were exhausted and fell asleep fast with little fanfare. Students are getting into the camp routine which makes the experience for them even more fun. The weather and mosquitoes are not impacting the fun here at camp. We have some new parent volunteers tapping in today for the remainder of camp. A huge thank you to our parent volunteers, they’ve been top notch this year.

Signing off from Day 3 out at Camp Storer!
