Hello Mill Creek Families,
Day 4 out at camp is going well so far. It’s still a little wet out here but significantly less than yesterday. The week will culminate tonight with Camp Olympics for the evening activity. This is a fun competition between cabins that kids enjoy.
One of the beneficial parts of having camp the second week of school is our staff gets an opportunity to develop positive relationships with students. Staff also gets a really good read on the class as a whole. Over and over in the conversations we’ve been a part of, our staff continuously say extremely positive things about this 7th grade group. The consistent themes have been correlated with resilience. The last two days have not been ideal with weather and teachers have shared they’ve had zero complaints from kids (which is unusual). Marianne Mutschler shared that usually when we have rain, the dining hall is packed with kids that don’t want to participate in their activities. She said this year we’ve had zero kids opt out of things because of the rain. This is a great sign about the flexibility and character of this group.
In a day and age where we see less and less resilience in kids each year, this group seems to have it in spades. That is very exciting to see for all of us. We will have our bumps in the road this year as we always do. However, Mill Creek staff is very optimistic about how this group will do for the next two years of middle school.
The last thing we always share is to be careful with your luggage when bringing it right into your house when your child returns from camp. It is not often, however we have had a few select years in which a bed bug has been discovered at camp. YMCA Storer Camp is very thorough in their inspections which is why they get discovered at all. Most resorts and hotels are not as meticulous with their checks as Storer Camp.
Merely washing items won’t kill bed bugs. The CDC and EPA have lots of information on how to prevent bed bugs from coming into your home. We will all hold our collective breath while they do the bed bug checks after we leave and if anything is discovered we will report it out as in the past. They did a thorough check before we came that included dogs that detect bed bugs (yes they exist) and there were no bed bugs at camp to start the week.
Campers will head back to Dexter tomorrow. We will send a communication out tomorrow with an estimated time for arrival of luggage and an estimated time of arrival for campers. Usually we get the luggage around noon and campers usually arrive around 2:00 PM. If possible, we highly recommend picking luggage up before your camper.
When picking up campers we also recommend using both parking lots (Dan Hoey and Dexter Ann Arbor) as it will be packed. Please be patient with the process because it will be very busy and slow. Once we send out the pick up time please make your best effort to be here a little early or on time. It’s tough on kids when they have to wait to get picked up.
See you all tomorrow!
