New Assistant Principal at Dexter High School: Congratulations to Mr. David Yon on his appointment as Assistant Principal at Dexter High School. Mr. Yon previously taught eighth grade at Mill Creek Middle School and will be a wonderful addition to the DHS administrative team. He succeeds Ms. Abby Holland, who will begin her new role as Assistant Director of Special Education this fall. We wish both Mr. Yon and Ms. Holland continued success in their new positions.
Cell Phone Policy Update: On Monday evening, the Dexter Community Schools Board of Education approved Policy 5209 - Student Use of Wireless Communications Devices.
As previously shared, recently enacted state legislation requires Dexter Community Schools to adopt a revised cell phone (wireless communication device) policy for the 2026–2027 school year that more firmly addresses the use of personal electronic devices during the school day. Over the past year, the District gathered input from students, staff, families, and other stakeholders to help inform updates to Policy 5209.
Below is a summary of the new policy:

Personal electronic devices (including cell phones, smart watches, student-owned laptops, tablets, and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices) may not be used during the school day.

If students bring a personal device to school, it must be powered off and stored in the school's designated storage area until dismissal, unless an approved exception applies.

Exceptions include documented medical needs, accommodations through a Section 504 Plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP), use of a district-owned or district-approved instructional device, or emergencies.

Students are responsible for the security of their personal devices. The District is not responsible for devices that are lost, stolen, damaged, or confiscated.

Devices used in violation of this policy may be confiscated until the end of the school day. Repeated violations may result in additional disciplinary action, including a parent/guardian meeting.
Please note that Policy 5209 also prohibits students from bringing personal technology (including laptops, tablets, smart watches, and similar devices) for instructional use during the school day. Any technology required for teaching and learning will be provided by the District.
Now that Policy 5209 has been approved, DCS administrators will update the Student Handbook and school-specific expectations, including procedures for device storage, the process for requesting approved exceptions, and disciplinary consequences for policy violations. These updates will be communicated before the start of the school year.
Schools of Choice: Dexter Community Schools is proud to participate in Michigan's Schools of Choice program, offering non-resident students in Young 5s through 11th grade the opportunity to attend Dexter Schools. Whether your family has recently moved outside the district or you're looking for a different educational setting for your student, Schools of Choice provides a pathway to join the Dexter community. Applications will be accepted from July 20 at 8:00 a.m. through July 31 at 3:00 p.m. Learn more and apply at www.dexterschools.org/
Construction Update: It seems that everywhere you look around town this summer, you'll find orange barrels, safety vests, hard hats, and heavy equipment! The same is true across the Dexter Community Schools campus, where our 2025 Bond projects are well underway.

Summer Grab & Go Meal Program: Families can take advantage of the Summer Grab & Go Meal Program, which provides a week's worth of meals to take home. Each eligible child will receive seven breakfasts and seven lunches once per week.
Meals are available for:

All children age 18 and younger

Individuals up to age 26 who are enrolled in a state-recognized education program
Children do not need to be present to receive meals. Parents, guardians, or other approved individuals may pick up meals on a child's behalf. A convenient Grab & Go location is available at Whitmore Lake High School on Fridays from 4:00–5:30 p.m

Summer Building Hours: As we transition into summer, please note that school building offices will be closed for much of the summer break. Dexter High School will maintain limited office hours during portions of the summer and will communicate those schedules directly with students and families.

Transportation Plans for 2026–2027: As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we ask all families to complete the District Transportation Form as soon as possible, even if your child will not ride the bus. Collecting accurate transportation information allows Dexter Community Schools to efficiently plan bus routes, staffing, and schedules to provide safe and reliable transportation for all students.
