Champion Learning: Develop, Educate, and INSPIRE!

Superintendent Update - December 2023

Dear Dexter Community Schools families,

Our buildings remain busy with teaching and learning as we approach the end of 2023. As the days grow shorter, it’s wonderful to have all the seasonal performances and events to look forward to. Dexter concerts and performances are always amazing!

REMINDER: Friday, December 8th is a professional development day for teachers and a half day for students. Anchor, Beacon, Wylie, Mill Creek are dismissed at 11:40am; Creekside & Dexter High School are dismissed at 11:25am.

Below are a few quick updates.

STATEWIDE VISIT

On Tuesday, December 5th, Dexter Community Schools hosted a visit of almost fifty educators representing fourteen school districts throughout Michigan plus Michigan Department of Education representatives. The visitors attended and observed classrooms throughout the school district to see our innovative work and the incredible learning opportunities created by our teachers every day. Our students guided the visitors and everyone left in awe of your incredible children and our amazing teachers and principals.

TRANSPORTATION

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for the non-transport zone community forums. We truly value our relationship with our community. We are in the process of considering and testing several of the ideas generated during these discussions before we move forward with any further proposals. Our initial proposed timeline of starting a non-transportation zone on January 8th is not feasible. We will continue to work on plans and will take a refined proposal to the DCS Board of Education in early January with an adjusted proposed implementation date.

We are still in dire need of hiring additional bus drivers.  If you are interested or know someone who would be a great bus driver, please contact us at hr@dexterschools.org.  We provide paid training ($21 per hour).

HELP WANTED AND NEEDED

  • 5 custodians ($16.44 - $19.78 per hour)
  • 1 maintenance person ($19.01 - $21.32 per hour)

  • Two full-time Early Childhood Teachers and additional part-time staff ($14-17 per hour depending on experience and qualifications; benefits for those working 30+ hours/week)

MULTIGENERATIONAL COMMUNITY CENTER

Dexter Community Schools is the recipient of an $8.5 million dollar allocation from the state budget to acquire, construct, renovate, and establish a program for a senior center and community center. Now that details of the funding are becoming more available, we will be hosting a series of community forums.

  • The first forum will be on Wednesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m. in the Bates Boardroom.
  • The second forum will be on Wednesday January 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Creekside Cafeteria.
  • The third forum will be held on Wednesday January 17th at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. (Please register for the webinar using this link.)

This is an incredible opportunity for our community and we look forward to conversations about this wonderful gift to our senior center and all residents of Dexter Community Schools.

Go Dreads!

Sincerely,

Christopher Timmis, EdD
