District Calendar

Please note: the 2019-20 calendar is still being determined. Selecting PD days, etc. is part of teacher contract negotiations, which are typically not complete before mid-May. As soon as those dates are agreed upon, we will post the full calendar here.

Community Education Night: Anxiety and Depression

Date: Thursday - March 07, 2019
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: DHS CPA

The Dexter Community is Invited!

Depression and Anxiety Presentation

March 7, 2019

As mental health issues among youth continue to increase, it is more important than ever for parents to know how to recognize symptoms and understand how to help.  The members of the Mill Creek Peer-To-Peer Team cordially invite all Parents (and children as parents deem appropriate) to this special event.

Date: Thursday, March 7, 2019
Time:  7:00 PM
Location:  DHS Center for the Performing Arts

Speakers from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Community High School, and local experts will address:

  • Signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety and how these issues affect our schools and our community

  • What may be going on “behind the scenes” that children are afraid to communicate to parents

  • Hear from individuals who have direct experience with depression and anxiety discuss how to talk to your child about mental health.

  • Meet Andrea, a high school student, and learn from her experience with depression
  • Learn from students and UM staff about how parents can be helpful in understanding and assisting a child who is struggling

Presenters:

Will Heininger is Outreach Coordinator at the U-M Depression Center and a former U-M Defensive lineman, who shares his story of overcoming major depression and anxiety while playing football and attending school at the University of Michigan. He works with the Outreach & Education staff at the Depression Center to deliver relatable mental health education, and improve outcomes in populations such as schools, businesses, athletic departments, teams, and communities. You can read more about his story here.

Andrea Schnell is a student at Ann Arbor Community High School and a speaker for Peer-To-Peer Trainings at the UM Depression Center. The Mill Creek P2P students met her in November and were so impressed with her story and the information she has to share that they wanted to invite her to be part of this event.

Stephanie Salazar, MPH is Outreach and Education Program Manager at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center. Earning her Master of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Michigan, she has experience planning and implementing health education and outreach initiatives for adolescents and young adults. Current projects include the Peer-to-Peer Depression Awareness Project, a peer-based mental health program for middle and high school students throughout Washtenaw County.
