As a child growing up in Colorado, I traveled very little. As a college student, I wanted to explore the world, and that desire to experience new things has remained with me. I spent two and a half years working on a fishing boat in Alaska, using the money earned for my college education and travel. I studied Spanish and studied in Guatemala and Costa Rica. After completing my bachelor’s degree, my husband and I moved to Japan for two years. We continued to travel, visiting Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Russia before returning back to the U.S. Once I returned, I obtained a master’s in education at the University of Michigan and began teaching at Dexter High School in 1999. My travels abroad have enhanced my classroom teaching in Social Studies. We continue to travel with our daughter, both within and outside of the U.S., but I have also spent summers completing workshops through the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. I am also an A.P. Reader, grading student essays for the College Board. Additional interests include hiking, camping, running, and reading.
