Kindergarten & Young 5 Registration
Important info, all in one place: KG/Y5 Registration Summary Handout
- Current young 5 students do NOT need to re-register for kindergarten.
- Here is the kindergarten waiver form.
Basic Registration Information
The Dexter Community School district has two young five through second grade buildings attached by a communal activity space. Initial placement at one or the other is essentially random, unless you have a sibling currently enrolled in one of those buildings, in which case both or your students will be placed at the same building. All Dexter students ride the same buses and both Y5-2 buildings use the same bus hub for drop-off and pick-up.
Dexter is a limited schools of choice district. We have two windows for applications, one in February and one in August, both for fall enrollment. We only accept applications during those windows. If you are interested in your young five or kindergarten student attending Dexter as a schools of choice student, you must first apply for schools of choice status. This doesn't guarantee you a spot in our program, but gives you the opportunity to apply for available space. Please see details below under Step 3.
On February 25th, the Y5-2 principals will host building tours from 6:00pm-7:00pm, followed by an information session. This is the perfect opportunity to ask questions about curriculum, school readiness, and to help you decide whether young 5 or kindergarten would be a better fit for your child. Current young 5 families need not attend. This event is for adults only.
On March 1st, we will open online pre-registration for Fall 2020. Families can complete the registration information online using the registration gateway at this link: registration.dexterschools.org. PLEASE NOTE: Completing online registration does not guarantee placement for young 5 -or- for schools of choice students. You must line up on the designated day of roundup for your group. The schools of choice application window dates will be posted on our website in January, 2020. The first window will be complete prior to Roundup.
Bring These Documents to Roundup:
- student's original birth certificate
- parent or guardian's photo ID
- proof of residence
- immunizations record (if complete)
March 25th and 26th, we will have kindergarten and young 5 roundup at the elementary buildings. Young 5 registration is first-come, first-served, and you must attend round-up in order to get a number on the list for available spots. Current Dexter residents have the first opportunity to line up for young five openings on March 25th. On March 26th, schools of choice applicants who have been accepted may line up for remaining young five spots.
- Dexter residents line up for young five spots on March 25th*
- Schools of choice young 5 students line up for available spots on March 26th.**
Families should complete their online registration prior to this roundup. Students are welcome to attend roundup but are not required to. Parents and guardians should bring the original birth certificate, proof of residence (in district or out) and any other paperwork (custody, etc.). We will make copies. The registrars will have a record of which SOC students were accepted.
Young five is primarily a full-day program. Space in our half-day young five program is very limited. Families wishing to enroll in the half-day young five program must appear in person at roundup on the designated day for their group in order to receive a place in line for a spot.
