Re: World Language for Potential IB Diploma Students
Before making any significant decisions regarding attempting to earn an IB diploma at DHS, it is recommended that students and parents meet with both the IB coordinator and their counselor. They work in tandem to ensure each IB diploma candidate has mapped out a schedule to the best of their ability based on their needs and interests. It is our aim to create access to the IB program for all students who are interested.
These are the world language options for students who have not taken a Foreign Language prior to 9th grade, but are interested in pursuing an IB Diploma:
- Option 1: Students may take the first year of Spanish/French online over the summer prior to entering 9th grade.
- Option 2: Students may take the first year of Spanish/French in 9th grade, the second year in 10th grade and then take Spanish 3 over the summer prior to entering 11th grade.
- Option 3: Students may take the first year of Spanish/French in 9th grade, the second year in 10th grade, and with teacher permission, enroll in IB Spanish/French in 11th grade. Students will work over the summer to obtain the necessary concepts to prepare them for the IB Language program.
A student learning in a classroom with a responsive teacher is considered best practice. However, in certain circumstances, online courses can provide necessary alternative options. Please consult with your child's counselor to determine if this may be the appropriate placement for your student.
