DHS Counseling Department

The mission of the Dexter High School counseling department is to provide high quality, comprehensive school counseling services to all students. Our program, as guided by the ASCA National Model, is designed to help all students develop and enhance their academic, career, and personal/social strengths in order to become responsible and productive citizens. There is a commitment to individual uniqueness and the maximum development of human potential. Through the skillful use of strategic, timely, and personal interventions, counselors customize educational experiences in order to enhance capabilities, close achievement gaps among high and low performing groups and support positive choices.

MPSERS ORS 3% Update

MPSERS 3% Update from CFO Sharon Raschke

(Excerpts from a staff email dated Feb. 23, 2018. Full email below)

On January 22, the District received the funds from the Office of Retirement Services with a list of who gets how much. There were many questions that needed to be answered as well as we needed a go-ahead from the Court of Claims that the funds could actually be refunded.

The money the ORS has given us was for the 3% mandatory deductions that hit your paychecks between 7/1/2010-8/31/2012. However, school districts were instructed to take the mandatory deductions through 1/31/2013 during the waiting and election period of the voluntary deductions. We will be refunding only what ORS has sent to us and instructed us to refund. The other five months of deductions are still being discussed by the Court of Claims and the plaintiff and the defendants in the case.

Existing employees will be refunded first. We have tried to test the refund of current employees and our tests were not successful. We will be meeting again with our software vendor on March 2. Many current staff want the option to defer their refunds to their retirement accounts. We are hoping to allow active employees to defer all their refunds into a 403b or 457 (tax deferred) or receive all of it as cash (taxed of course). If our second attempt to test the refund software works, we are hoping to give staff a 2-3 week window to decide to defer or not. We hope to issue the refunds sometime in April. We will process the refunds on a separate payroll check that will be direct deposited into staff's existing bank accounts, and staff will be able to see the separate check in the eSuite portal. Following successful refunds to current staff, we will work to contact the inactive employees to process their refunds.
We are working as quickly as we can. Thanks for your patience.
