DHS Counseling Department

The mission of the Dexter High School counseling department is to provide high quality, comprehensive school counseling services to all students. Our program, as guided by the ASCA National Model, is designed to help all students develop and enhance their academic, career, and personal/social strengths in order to become responsible and productive citizens. There is a commitment to individual uniqueness and the maximum development of human potential. Through the skillful use of strategic, timely, and personal interventions, counselors customize educational experiences in order to enhance capabilities, close achievement gaps among high and low performing groups and support positive choices.

A Warm Welcome to Our New Creekside Intermediate Staff

by Melanie McIntyre

“We are so excited for the new school year and to welcome these new staff members!”
- Tammy Reich, Creekside Principal

Jesse Ballard is a new para-educator at Creekside Intermediate in his first year with Dexter schools. Prior to coming to Dexter, Jesse completed his master’s degree at the University of Southern California. Last summer, Jesse taught American Government and Essay Writing at the University of Michigan.

“I love coming to Creekside every morning with so many professionals that are enthusiastic about educating children. I am learning so much from Mrs. Melvin and Mrs. Brown. I am so thankful to be a part of their classroom and to experience the inspiring curriculum that fosters inclusion and positive outcomes.”

Kaylee Canell is a new para-educator at Creekside, and also coaches the Mill Creek Middle School cheerleaders. She loves spending her free time at football games, cheerleading competitions and with her family.

Beth Kovarik and her husband Dana recently moved to Dexter from the Chicago area. They have 4 children that attend 4 different Dexter schools, so as a family, they are involved in 5 schools. This is Beth’s 15th year teaching; she has taught all grades in K-8 special education. Outside of school, she is busy keeping up with her kiddos or reading.

“My family are I are so excited to learn and grow in Dexter.”

Lori Marcoux lives in Manchester with her husband and two small dogs.  She was a para-educator in Manchester for 3 years before coming to Dexter.  Before that, Lori worked in the Brighton Area Schools for 24 years, but moved to the "out to the country" in 2013.  She has 2 grown sons, enjoys reading, baking and nature walks.

Jennifer Smallbone is a United States Air Force veteran.  She was a teacher of Social Studies for 8 years in Texas in both middle and high school.  She has a master's degree in Public Administration which she earned while subbing in Michigan for 1.5 years.  Jennifer is the mother of a 2nd grader at Anchor Elementary.

Janelle Walker is the mother of two beautiful children. She grew up in Dexter, went to Dexter Schools and now her daughter just started kindergarten here as well. Janelle is excited to have her children grow up in the same town she did and enjoy the wonderful school district, which is why she chose to work at the schools.

“I am glad I can help Dexter students just like all of my teachers did!”
