Mill Creek Athletics

With the help of our supportive community, specifically through the generosity of Athletic Booster Club of Dexter, the Educational Foundation of Dexter, and the Banfield Foundation, Dexter is able to offer additional opportunities to middle school students to participate in athletics.  In collaboration with members from these organizations and others, the following middle school athletic philosophy was drafted to guide our middle school athletic program. Please see the Middle School Sports page for details about each sport.

Middle School Sports

Fall: Football, Cross Country, Volleyball, Field Hockey
Winter: Boys and Girls Basketball, Swim and Dive, Wrestling
Spring: Track

Other recreational opportunities for middle school students: Community Education offers several athletic classes/teams for middle school students. These are not school-sponsored sports. Learn more about what's available on the Community Education catalog and class registration webpages. 

Important Info for Middle School Athletes

Athletics Registration

Athletics Registration has been consolidated with regular back-to-school student registration. Each August, families use the district's Registration Gateway to update family contact information, etc. and acknowledge receipt of important information. Part of this process includes acknowledgment of receipt of the athletics handbook, policies, and concussion protocol. Families only need to review registration (including the athletics information) one time each school year.

    Once tryouts have concluded, students must meet district pay-to-participate requirements.  All pay-to-participate payments can be made online through Community Education, or in person at the DHS Athletic Office.

    Middle School Athletic Fees are as follows:

    • 1st sport: $150
    • 2nd sport: $100
    • 3rd sport: $75

    Fees are per student, per school year. There is a family cap of $700 per year.

    Athletic Scholarships are available. Please apply for scholarship funds as early as possible. Return the Athletic Scholarship Application to the DHS Athletic offices.

    School Sports Physicals

    To participate in any school sport a student must have a physical exam and a completed MHSAA Physical Form on file in the Athletic office.  A valid physical must be turned in (given to the coach or placed on file in the DHS Athletic office) prior to the first day of practice. 

    Please download the MHSAA Physical Form and take it to your doctor's appointment. In the event that you have a different physical form from your doctor, the MHSAA form must still be filled out, signed, and attached to the physical. The MHSAA form requires signatures in several areas from both students and parents.

    School Attendance

    School Attendance

    An athlete must be in classroom attendance all day in order to dress and participate in an athletic contest and/or practice that day, unless excused by a prearranged special excuse. A special excuse is defined as a doctor, dentist appointment, or a funeral. The student must demonstrate proof upon request from the Coach and Athletic Director. Staying home to rest and/or calling in sick for half the day are not considered excused absences and the athlete will not be allowed to participate.

    Academic Eligibility

    Mill Creek Middle School eligibility policy has three levels. Our goal is for every student to be able to participate fully in athletics while maintaining excellence in academics.

    Level 1
    Student is passing all classes and has a GPA of at least 2.0.
    Student is eligible to participate and their academic performance will be monitored at the mid-term and grade marking.

    Level 2
    a.  Student is failing one class and has a GPA of at least a 2.0.  (or)
    b.  Student is not failing any classes but has a grade point average below a 2.0.
    Student is able to practice and compete but would be considered "on probation."  Student is required to submit a weekly power school printout with teacher signatures to maintain eligibility.

    Level 3
    a.  Student is ineligible due to failing two classes or failing one class and a GPA less than 2.0.
    Student is allowed to practice and must earn the privilege to play by submitting a weekly power school printout with teacher signatures to maintain eligibility.



    Adults who are not permanent DCS employees but are in our buildings and facilities interacting/working with students on a regular basis must have a volunteer form on file. This includes classroom parents, club leaders, athletic team helpers, and so forth.

    Concussions are a serious problem for athletes. Dexter Community Schools require all athletes, their families, and coaches to learn about concussion and sign a pledge form indicating they understand the seriousness and will comply with our concussion protocol.
